What ideas / questions / reflections / challenges might be arising as you work with your theme (theme) – How are you working with the meaning of your word? Where are you drawing inspiration from?
I was given the word “messy.” I often struggle with perfection in my pieces. Things have to be just right or I do not finish them. In this piece, I let the felt fall where it wanted and created around it. No questions, No plans. It was oddly freeing.
How were you introduced to art? Was it someone, a class, a culture, family, friends, etc.?
I was introduced to art growing up in the Brunswick school system. It was a required class for as long as I can remember. However my creativity certainly stemmed from my mother. Each season our home is embellished with unique floral arrangements from the garden and decorations hinting an upcoming holiday. My childhood desk chair still has remnants of tiny green feet stamped for St. Patricks day.
What role does art play in your life today? How has art made you feel these past few months / year / during the pandemic?
Art is a way for me to express my creativity, give to others, and feel proud of myself. During the pandemic, I used art to escape, kill time, and create toys for my newly adopted cat. As challenging as this time has been, I think the opportunity to slow down and get creative has been healing for so many. I know multiple creatives who have leaned into the shift, quit their jobs, and are now successfully full-time in their studios.
